Bruce Matthews Golf Classic

2012 Bruce Matthews Golf Classic

It's time to start cleaning your clubs and practicing your putts, because one of Houston's favorite golf outings is just around the corner. The 2012 Bruce Matthews Golf Classic will get underway at 9 am on Monday, March 26, at Champions Golf Club. As an annual benefit for Greater Houston Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), the tournament is the ultimate day of fun for golfers and outdoor enthusiasts alike (i.e, you don't have to be a great golfer to have a great time).

The event begins at 7 am with registration, range practice and breakfast, provided by Chick-fil-A. A shotgun start at 9 am will follow, and golfers will play in a scramble format. Teams can consist of five players, or four players and a celebrity athlete. The celebrity aspect brings an extra element of fun to the event, as former and current professionals from the competitive worlds of football, basketball, baseball and even golf, join in to compete for top tournament honors (including longest drive and closest-to-the-hole) and raise money for FCA.

Tournament host Bruce Matthews will be on hand to welcome golfers to the tournament and participate in the scramble. Bruce was drafted ninth in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He holds the league record for most games (296) and seasons (19) played by an offensive lineman. Bruce was selected to 14 Pro Bowls, a league record. In his first year of eligibility, 2007, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He continues to be active in supporting various charitable organizations such as Special Olympics, Leukemia Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

One of the legendary aspects of the golf classic is the luncheon buffet, auction and raffle that follows tournament play. Participants will be overwhelmed by the generous luncheon spread, and can cap a great meal by bidding on one-of-a-kind sports packages and items such as trips, autographed jerseys, event tickets and suites.

Entry fees vary according to your interest level. We encourage everyone to consider a sponsorship this year, which also includes tickets to a VIP Reception (dinner as well as live and silent auction) at Irma's Southwest Grill on Sunday, March 25. If you are unable to participate in person, individual hole sponsorships are available for $500.00, and are a great way to advertise your business or organization to other business owners and corporate decision makers who participate on the golf teams.

The 2012 Bruce Matthews Golf Classic will fill up fast, so don't miss your opportunity to participate and possibly even start a tradition as a tournament supporter. In addition to assisting FCA, you'll find it's a great way to spend time with your colleagues, customers and friends.
